神奈川県に暮らす堀さんは、奥さん、小学6年生の娘さん、4年生の息子さんの4人家族です。
世帯年収は600万円台（ご主人は正社員、奥さんはパートタイマー）、2年前に購入した中古マンションの購入が、初めての住宅購入でした。
当時、予算を抑えたいこともありましたが、元気な子供たち（特に下の男児）の足音を気にして1階の物件を検討していたそうです。
築年数が約10年の鉄筋コンクリート造マンションの１階です。広さ68㎡（全体を畳で表すと約40畳）の3LDK。価格は3500万円でした。
駅からは徒歩15分程度で、マンションのエントランスはバス通り（幅員が約７ｍ道路）に向いており、裏側には幅員が約5ｍの道がありました。堀さんのお部屋の4畳ほどの庭は、その幅員約5ｍの道に接していました。
見学したのが日曜日の午前中で、同伴した不動産業者さんに「この物件、午後から別の案内が入っています。早めに決断したほうがよいですよ」と言われ、その場で購入申込書を記入したようです。
契約締結当日に、売主である前居住者さんから「少し人が通るけどあまり気にはならないと思います」と聞いていたようですが、それが家族に大きな負担をかけることになります。
付近には工場や団地があり、その道路は、平日の通勤時間である朝8時～9時30分と、帰宅時間である夕方17時～17時30分には、徒歩で通る人が1分あたり3名程度のペースで存在するところでした。
庭に面するリビングのカーテンを開けると、通行人と目があってしまうくらい視線が行き来する構造になっているのです。
普通のカーテンを閉めると室内が暗くなってしまうので、内側に薄いレースのカーテンを設置し、普段はそれを閉めていました。
しかし、レースのカーテンがあるとはいえ、「もしかしたら外から見えているのではないか」という懸念はどうしても残ってしまいます。
着替えるときはもちろんのこと、部屋着として着る服にも気を遣い、ソファーでくつろぐポーズまでも気にするハメになってしまったというのです。
さらに、掃除機を掛けたり、洗濯物を干したりするときにも通行人からの視線を感じるようでした。
奥さんは10時～15時の短時間パートタイマーだったので、自宅で家事をこなすことが多く、自宅滞在時間が家族のなかで一番長かったのですが、そのために「外からの視線」を気にする機会が多くなり、精神的に参ってしまっているようでした。
また、年頃の女の子がいることもあり、女性にとって優しくない家という印象を持ってしまったようです。
実際のところは、外から室内をジロジロ見る方は少なかったのかもしれませんが、過剰に反応してしまっていた部分もあったのかもしれません。
しかし「見られている気がする」と意識すればするほど、さらに視線が気になってしまうという悪循環のなか、結局（レースではない）カーテンを閉めて家族は生活することに。
せっかくの日当たり良好な新居なのに、昼間でもカーテンと照明といった生活が続いてしまったようです。
本当ならくつろげるはずのせっかく自宅に、家族はストレスを抱えるようになってしまいました。
結局、堀さん一家は物件売却の決断をすることになりましたが、資金的な都合もあり、2年間は我慢しようということで、よくやく買い替えができることになったというわけです。
