オーストラリアの非営利団体、エグジット・インターナショナル（Exit International）は2018年に、世界初となる3Dプリント製の安楽死マシン「サルコ（Sarco）」を開発し、賛否を含む多くの注目を集めました。
そしてこのほど、自殺ほう助が合法となっているスイスで、サルコを運用するための法的審査に合格したと発表されました。
サルコは、3Dプリンターで作られたカプセル型マシンで、規制薬物を使うことなく、患者を安楽死に導きます。
まず、患者がカプセルの中に入り、サルコを起動させます。
専用のボタンを押すと、台座部の装置から液体窒素が放出され、マシン内を満たしていきます。
約30秒でマシン内の酸素濃度が21%から1%まで急速に低下し、患者は眠りにつきます。
意識を失う前に、頭がぼうっとしたり、わずかな陶酔感があるかもしれませんが、5〜10分のうちに安らかな死が訪れるという。
